When people talk about superfoods, more often than not, goji berries come into the conversation. Have you been wondering about the health benefits of goji berries? Many claim its the next fountain of youth. But what really is the goji berry? And can it really prevent chronic illness? Does it have any side effects? What are Goji Berries?

Called the wolfberry, it is a bright orange-red berry that comes from a shrub that's native to China. In Asia, goji berries have traditionally been eaten for longevity and good health. Over time, people have used goji berries to treat many common health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, fever, and age-related eye problems. Goji berries are eaten raw, cooked, or dried (like raisins) and are used in herbal teas, juices, wines, and medicines.

What Are the Benefits of Goji Berries?

Research and lab tests show that berries --  strawberries, blueberries,  cranberries, acai berries, etc. -- offers some definite health benefits as they contain some of the most potent antioxidants in any natural foods. These powerful antioxidants and other compounds may help prevent degenerative diseases such as cancer and other illnesses, including heart disease. These nutrients are also shown to boost the immune system and lower cholesterol levels in the body.

Cosuming antioxidant-rich foods may also slow the aging process by helping protect cell DNA from damage caused by free-radicals. Antioxidants are shown to reduce the destructive effect of these free radicals, helping reduce the risk of the development of some serious diseases.

Goji berries are also rich in other nutrients such as vitamin A, which is also said to have anti-aging benefits. Goji, as a whole food contain special compounds that help boost the immune system, protect vision, and may help prevent cardiovascular disease. Others state that it may also boost brain health and protect against age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Some researchers say that goji berries gave benefits in terms of mental well-being, and calmness, athletic performance, happiness, quality of sleep, better skin, and overall feeling of wellness and energy.

Does It Have Any Side Effects I Should Be Aware of?

There may be some possible herb-drug interactions with goji berries. If you take warfarin (a blood thinner), you may want to avoid goji berries. Goji berries may also interact with diabetes and blood pressure drugs.
Also, if you have pollen allergies, you may want to stay away from this fruit. However, when eaten in moderation, goji berries appear to be safe. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.
